A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

ASK ME NO QUESTIONS

Gerry’s green movement anthem containing the plea,”don’t let Mother Nature become just a memory”, written in an era when environmental matters were neither fashionable nor sexy, long before the cause became such a global, political issue. (Maverick Magazine May 2008)

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Written in 1977, a peace anthem about the “Troubles” during some of the darkest days in Ireland’s recent history. Described in THE IRISH NEWS in May 2010 as “one of Ireland’s leading Peace Anthems”. It is equally relevant today and is universally applicable to similar conflict situations throughout the world.

GALLOPHER THOMPSON

Based loosely on the real life highway man Naoise O’Haughan, who hid out on the Cavehill in Belfast before being caught by the Redcoats in the early 1700’s. With poetic licence Gerry used the name of a north Belfast character “Galloper Thompson” for the hero of the story.

MARINA JANE

Based on the well documented true story of a new born baby girl, found in a rowing boat that had washed ashore, the mother having died in childbirth. The child is adopted by a family in Ballygally on the Antrim coast and eventually marries a local lad who is lost at sea. Marina Jane Parke in despair sets up home in a stone shelter on the beach to await her husband’s return. Tragically on the night of the 21st December 1894 she is washed back out to sea and drowned in a fierce storm.

ZERO TIME

Zero Time is the term for the critical time that is arrived at when counting down to a nuclear explosion and there is no turning back.

LENNIE

Lennie is about a homeless young man forced to live on the dangerous and uncaring streets of Belfast during the troubled 70’s- truly poignant. (Maverick Magazine May2008)

EAGLE AND THE DOVE

This is an analogy with clever lyrics on the abuse of power and well worth a listen. (Maverick Magazine May 2008)

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
